What's New in SolidWorks 2010- Rapid Dimension & Dimension Palette

Rapid Dimension & Dimension Palette

In SolidWorks 2010, there's a lot of enhancement focus on how to make the user to create a 2D drawing in a smarter and faster way. One of the enhancement is user can use the rapid dimension manipulator to place dimension so they are evenly spaced and easier to read. The rapid dimension appears when you insert dimension in drawing views. You can use the manipulator to place dimension at evenly spaced intervals. For example, if you insert a dimension between two dimensions, the new dimension is spaced evenly between them.

Tips: To place dimensions quickly,

Use Tab key to switch to the different manipulator locations

Space bar to place the dimension in a suitable location outside of the model geomentry .

Besides that, the new introduced dimension palette also enable the user easily to access the dimensioning formatting. Let's have a look on the video on how the enhancement can help you to produce your drawing faster than ever before!

What's New in SolidWorks 2010- How to apply cosmetic thread in 2D engineering drawing?

Cosmetic Thread

Facing problem to assign cosmetic thread in your Drawing? Good news from SolidWorks 2010! With the enhancement in 2010, you can directly assign the cosmetic thread in 2D drawing without prepare it in your 3D model 1st. Basically, user just need to activate the cosmetic thread function under drawing annotation, then select the circular edge from the drawing view that you wish to apply the symbol, various type of hole standards is provided under this function! Due to the capability of propagating the changes in 2D into 3D model, the cosmetic thread symbol that has been applied in 2D drawing will just update the 3D model itself as well. That's why when you generate the section view from the parent view of cosmetic thread, you can clearly see the symbol is appear as well in the new generated section view!

What's New in SolidWorks 2010- Hole Wizard Enhancement!

In SolidWorks 2010, when creating hole using Hole Wizard,

1. User no longer need to preselect a planar face to create a 2D sketch, the hole wizard creates a 2D sketch unless you select a non planar face or explicitly request a 3D sketch.

2. New added Australia Standard in hole wizard function!

3. Straight Pipe Threads added for all standards! Previously, the Hole Wizard supported straight pipe tapped holes for the DIN standard only.

Let's have a look on the video as shown below:

Let's join GD&T in SolidWorks!

GD&T in SolidWorks

GD&T stand for Geometric Tolerancing & Dimensioning. GD&T is a symbolic language used on engineering drawings and computer generated 3D solid models for explicitly describing nominal geometry and its allowable variation . Basically, it serve the purpose of describing the engineering intent of parts & assemblies. Proper application of GD&T will ensure that the allowable part and assembly geometry defined on the drawing leads to parts that have the desired form and fit (within limits) and function as intended. Thus, by having this knowlegde, it will definitely improve the communication between design, manufacturing and inspection!

Here, IME CadCam Training Centre is offering a course called GD&T in SolidWorks which this will introduce the participants to the fundamental of GD&T principles and evaluate machined parts for assembly form & fit. For more information, please visit:

Let's join Introduction to Jigs & Fixtures Design!

Introduction To Jigs & Fixtures Design

When talking about jigs &fixtures design, do you know what is all about? It is one of the important element in managing precision engineering bussiness. Especially for students, perhaps you may come across in one of your semester course, but does it enough for you?Does it cater your need to become a good designer in this field? If you wish to enhance your industrial knowledge in jigs and fixtures design, here IME CadCam Training Centre is offering a course which provide tooling engineers with a straight forward learning approach on how to design jigs and fixtures. This course will including both theory and software hands on for the jigs and fixtures design. For more information, please visit:

What's New SW 2010 -> Mouse Gesture, Sketch Fillet & Split Line

Mouse Gesture
Feel cool in modeling after watching the video? Yes, the interface that you have seen is one of the user interface improvement in SolidWorks 2010 called mouse gesture. It is a shortcut way to minimize the movement of mouse as you proceed with your modeling. It is very simple to activate the function whereby you just need to hold on your right hand mouse button and move your cursor then a guide with few command will just appear on the window.

As you can see from the video, user is allowed to customized the command provided within the guide by go to Tool> Customize...then select the Mouse Gestures tab. You can assign up to eight command within a guide! Come on! work smarter and faster with the existing of mouse gestures!

Sketch Fillet & Split Line

Another good thing in SolidWorks 2010 would like to share with you all is sketch fillet and split line function! From the video, you will found that the sketch fillet is much more interactive compared with last time, it can be even applied to two discontinuous lines! For split line fuction, SolidWorks now can support multiple closed contours at once! This is very convenient for the user especially for simulation, when you need to divide the surface into few area for multiple part loading!Does it cool? =)

Want to know what's new in SolidWorks 2010???

How can this happen within few seconds???

What are the differences between imported file and native SolidWorks part file opened in SolidWorks window? Look at the 1st SolidWorks window picture from above, obviously the imported file doesn't carry any feature as compared with the SolidWorks part file. This will cause a lot of inconveniences when you are trying to modify the imported file. So, what can we do is to recognize all the feature belongs to the part. Let's have a look on how Direct Editing SolidWorks help you to manage it!

Direct Editing is one of the powerful functions introduced in SolidWorks 2010. It is a feature presented by FeatureWorks-> one of the add-in in SolidWorks Professional. It has the ability to let you directly edit an imported file without concerning the sequence and even the possible features within the part. What you need to do is just simply right click on the option that you want to edit and select the edit features command, the software is intelligent enough to recognize all the feature within the part! The most important thing is, all the recognized features are editable as what you expect in SolidWorks! Amazing?

SolidWorks Innovation Day 2009, Malaysia

IME SolidWorks Innovation Day 2009 had just com to an end. This event launched at Johor, Selangor and Penang. It was a very successful event with everyone support, especially your participants during the event. On behalf of IME, I would to take these opportunities to delivery my appreciation to all of you and special thanks to the co-organizer SIRIM BHD and (PSDC) Penang Skills Development Centre and off course not to forget our Platinum sponsor HP and Gold sponsor 3D Connexion.

Are you all enjoy during the event? Are you going back with fruitful information? Please say yes :)

Let’s start with the Photo Rendering Contest, this contest announced a month ago before IME SolidWorks Innovation Day (SWID) started. We received great responds from a lot of local talented SolidWorks Lover. They design and render a very nice image; it was competitive enough for all the entries. The result only knew after voted by the participants in Sirim. Below is the first winner, Congratulation to Teay Siew Hon!!

At the locatin, IMEbSWID'09 kick start with the topic “Design for Sustainability”, “Design for future”, “Design for your love”. SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress is a new feature for SolidWorks 2010, it help user to immediately determine the environmental impact of any part  that designed. SolidWorks Sustainability product includes an environmental impact, dashboard, customized reports and a tool to find alternative materials to easily compare and instantly improve the sustainability of a part.

SolidWorks® 2010 product line, is a new set of software products that optimize and bulletproof the core product design functions that make designers and engineers successful every day. Through the use of CAD, simulation, data management, documentation, and environmental impact assessment, organizations will transform their inspirations into innovation, supported by a vibrant community of CAD users, content, technology, and expertise.

SolidWorks 2010 new enhancements have helped speed up drawing creation. SolidWorks 2010 also provides greatly enhanced reference plane creation methods, sheet metal functionality, weldment performance, component mirroring capabilities, and direct editing tools. And PhotoView 360 makes it even easier for novices to render photorealistic images like professionals.

It was a very excited SolidWorks 2010 presentation done by Charlie and with 2 handsome guys running up and down in the auditorium hall with one pretty lady searching for a lucky star. Congratulation to those lucky stars, who able to pick up a lucky “alphabet” by winning a limited SolidWorks’ souvenir, especially those who had won the international adaptor and the multiport solar charger. Congratulation!!!!

Still remember, me myself also involved as an ACTOR during 3D Via composer presentation, this is my first time explore on a design solution “3D VIA Composer”, I don’t have any engineering back ground, I do not learn Illustrator, photoshop, SolidWorks, etc. But, I had managed to do the demonstration to all of you. It had proved that, a non CAD user is able to learn this documentation solution easily. You are now able to do your own Service manual, Service instruction, etc by your own. Photo capturing, computer print screen is not a right tools for you anymore. It is so easy, fast and accurate! By just using 3D VIA composer to create you product documentation.

MAHAL Equipment was growing since last year SolidWorks Innovation Day 2008 after they implemented SolidWorks PDM Enterprise. The presentation highlighted some productivity features for preparing models and drawings for distribution. A new convert, publish, print, and plot capability, for example, automatically converts hundreds of manufacturing drawings into neutral formats for quoting, collaboration, batch printing, and sharing with other systems. What will happen next year for MAHAL Equipment? Will this company started his business to other country? Emmmm…. I think this possibility is high, because his engineers (Mr Sew) are now exploring SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress. This features able to help a company reduce a lot of material and able to determine the environmental impact of a part, which help to reduce carbon footprint. Waiting for “episode 3 MAHAL Equipment”….. See you next year

Opps, while talking about what’s new for SolidWorks 2010, Product Documentation (3D Via Composer), Product Data Management (SolidWorks PDM Enterprise)…. Do you realize, it is not enough for you to make your company grow!!! A smarter Design and manufacturing company, they always concern on the product lifecycle, the product material, how to reduce the product material while maintaining the product quality. Here, SolidWorks Simulation in place. Before a product being manufacturer, simulation is the most important step for us to determine the particular product lifecycle, the best material should use. SolidWorks Simulation empowers teams by arming them with tools to easily validate design decisions, uncover hidden problems before they affect production, and potentially save hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thanks to Kokuyo borrowing us their office chair for the SolidWorks Simulation presentation, through this case study you should have a very clear picture how a design simulation apply in a design and why is was so important for a manufacturer.

Hoping you had enjoying the event well! By bringing the most fruitful information back after the event.
