1 more day to go

Tomorrow is the big day. Really sorry for my lack of posting. Jam pack with preparation. More posting after this. :)

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Get Comfortable and Get Use To It

Put your hand together for our new join member- Farizal!~ (temporary he prefer us to help posting. Soon, he going to do this by himself.)

Designing by my definition is a work that required you to do it right and to do it fast. You goal is not just to finish the design... but to finish the design fast in order to make any change soon. That is why CAD came in otherwise people still modelling with clay or plasticine.

Since we will be designing and changes a lot, here is my few tips to make this routine pleasurable and convenient.
Pre Designing

1. Turn the room light on. Only hackers stay in dark and ruin their eye due to long expose from single light source...designers don't.
2. Caffeine is good. So help your self with hot beverages in the morning.
3. Get a good chair. Make sure your feet is flat to the ground with out pressuring your knees (too low) or your legs is hanging (too high). Arm rest is and added bonus.
4. Be aware of your palm and wrist on the table.Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is no joke.
5. Position you sitting height so that you will be seeing monitor display at 15° downward angle. This will please your neck and back.
6. Remember to unstuck your eyes from the monitor display every 15 min. Re focus your view to a further object in order to relax your eyes.
7. Switch to sandals. If permitted, bring a pair to your office. You felt more comfortable and reduce smelly socks syndrome after work.

Designing
1. Change window color to other the white.
White is a high contrast color and the amount of light bouncing back to your eyes is high. Therefore, I recommend to be change to a “cooler” color like green here:

This will affect  all the white color window in SolidWorks to this less harmful to eyes color. You will notice that you can prolong your designing time with out tiring your eyes.

2. Change color in the SolidWorks working area.
If felt the feeling “this is not correct to my eyes” kind of situation when designing, then stop yelling “Mah eyesss! It burns” because you can change the dull gray color to more "eye comfort background".

From the top bar, go  to “Tools”, then “Options”.Then go “System Options” tab, select  “Colors”. Under “Color Scheme Settings”,pick “Viewport Background” and hit Edit on the right to change color that suit your mood.

3. Maximize Working Window.

Most people don't realize that you can maximize more of your work space window by resizing the icon or change the workspace layout.

If you happened to have a wide screen monitor (pfft..who doesn't nowadays), you can change the workspace layout by going to “View”, then “Workspace” and then change to “Widescreen”.

You will notice the panel have been place on the side so that the top and bottom screen been clear for better view.

Further more, re size the icon to a smaller and remove text/description.This will give more workspace viewing area.

Go to “Tool” then hit “Customize”. At the “Toolbars” tab, unchecked the “Use large button with text” box. This will remove the text that took the icon space. Then, at Options on the right, unchecked the “Large icon” box. Only leave “Show tooltips” just in case you forget what the icon/button do. Just hover over it to pop out the tool tips. For pro with shortcuts out there,

just unchecked the “Enable command manager” to the hide all the icon/button set completely.

So, here you have it. A clean workspace window. I just left the filter task bar down there because I use it a lot lately.

I think that is all for now. For next entry, I will tell about Speed Designing, a method that shave of those millisecond of designing time and the art of placing the right key that make you a ninja with shortcuts.

Not forget to mention improving performance and reliability.

I always told my friends and users, "with SolidWorks, you can expect more than a 3D design CAD. " It's a tool than can help you in presentation and communication. Counter-strike style walkthrough features for easy video capturing, PhotoView 360 now integrated into SolidWorks. The overall collaboration features improvement allow users to product non-CAD materials in a shorter time frame.

Power & plant dudes, make sure you free yourself for coming SolidWorks Innovation Day 2010, to witness the great improvement in structure and piping. It's going to rock your world with SolidWorks 2011. So many enhancement for these features and most of it were driven by users. Grid system, weld table, weld gap for pipe, etc. You ask for it, you get it!~

That all for now. Not willing to unveil too much for the time being. You may go to HERE for some others enhancements. Of course, do block you calendar for coming SolidWorks Innovation Day 2010 in the month of October. It's show time!~

Stay tune~

Science or Art In Product Innovation

A Whitepaper by IBM

For a lazy reader like me, it's hard to drag me read, but recently an article in SolidWorks Community attracted my attention. It go like this:

Far too many companies think of Innovation as an art rather than the result of high-performance business processes.

Every day, companies gamble with their futures, making bets big and small, risking “currency” in the form of their strategic direction…

Best Performing Companies derive 65% of their success from innovative projects:

65% of best performers succes from innovative projects. The best example in my mind now is: Apple's products, I-pod, I-phone, I-pad, I-touch etc. In short period of time, now Apple is the leading technologies player in the market by launching products that drive the whole world crazy!

In Malaysia term: Don't be a copy cat! Start your own design!!! Start an Orange Inc. ^.^ V

SolidWorks Lab- Presentation Studio

Before you continue reading this sharing, do you know that we can save as 3D pdf? Ya, you view your 3D in pdf, something like the eDrawings but not as powerful as eDrawings.

Instead of sending the file in SolidWorks format or any kind of drawing, it's common that mostly prefer to send the drawing out in .PDF format. Talking about improving the communication via E-method, 3D PDF is one of the output you can prefer to go with after eDrawings. But the presentation of a 3D PDF is too simple, just a 3D model which you can rotate in a piece of blank PDF paper.

Under SolidWork labs, a product know as presentation studio launch. PDF is the standard method for sharing documents. Add in 3D capabilities, and now you've got documents really worth sharing.

Click me to enjoy above 3D PDF in 3D

With Presentation Studio you can create a Design Brief, Price Sheet, Technical Summary, Feature Review, or Product Specification in minutes. But unlike ordinarly PDFs, an embedded 3D model conveys your design in a way 2D just can't. The PDF can then be read on any computer with Adobe Acrobat 8 or above.

With this, the PDF you sent can 'talk' with your potential prospect and make you talk less and sell better. To enrich Presentation Studio capability, SolidWorks lab recently launched Presentation Studio Theme Editor. From the name, so obvious it use to edit the theme. The new application provides a graphical interface to edit Presentation Studio Themes. Feel free to explore more and get full use of it; either you presenting and submit projects report to your lecturer or presenting your idea to your clients.

Looking forward to what's new in PhotoView360 in year 2011!!!

Good news for all the PhotoView 360 fans!

What make me so looking forward to SolidWorks 2011 is....
Beginning with the release of SolidWorks 2011, PhotoView 360 will now be the standard photorealistic rendering solution for all SolidWorks software versions moving forward, which means, PhotoWorks will no longer be available. With the launch of SolidWorks 2011, SolidWorks software and PhotoView 360 will provide the equivalent rendering capabilities that are now available in PhotoWorks, including, but not limited to:

(i) The creation and reuse of custom appearances, scenes, and decals :
I personally like this very much!

(ii) The ability to directly render different configurations, display states, and model changes:
This is good since we will able to save different color combination wthin a single file!

(iii) The production of rendered animations from a SolidWorks Motion study
Yay! This will make the animation much more lively!

(iv) The ability to use physical lights in renderings
Yup, current PhotoView360 still have limitation to create our own custom directional light , spot lights, etc...

(v) The scheduling of renderings to be completed later
Yeshhh! This can let the bundle of rendering images completed at off peak hours!

Forum time

Foruming is one of Malaysian culture. Forum is the best place for you, who have common interests to share and talk the same language.

A young Malaysian saw that we, SolidWorks users here need an area, a chat room for  us to share our SolidWorks knowledge and tips. Therefore, this young man, Farizal took the initiative to start a forum: Malaysia SolidWorks Designer Communities.

Special columns were dedicated for IME to promote training and post SolidWorks update <- admin, you are so kind!~ We shall try to do something with that. (Now you know why I promoting the forum *laugh*)

Personally, I like the mamak corner. Usually this is the forum area where most members hang out because they can take about anything, either related or non related with SolidWorks; and trust me, the culture already started although just the few of us. Do check it out ya!~ (Can we share on how to make a cup of nice Teh Tarik? )

Guys, please give your support by joining the forum. The registration is so easy, just like eating ABC. Simple click below link to register:

World Cup fever!

Do you ever think before to model a football in SolidWorks, it looks simple since it is a round shape. Somehow, when you really look into it, you will found that there is a "hidden challenge" inside! Due to the shape is form with a combination of hexagon and pentagon, how would you control the number and size for each of them in order to get a sphere with certain diameter???
I have download and explore a SolidWorks football model from 3D Content Central, here is the video to show how's the model being constructed! Any idea on how to obtain the ~16 deg and ~ 21 deg of the "cut extrude"in order to obtain the very 1st pentagon and hexagon?

Tips: Intersection Curve

I have received an imported sheet metal part and was asked to create some cutting along the stepped faces. Normally, when we plan to create some cutting along a folded part we will rather to make it flatten so that it is easier for us to sketch out the shape on the flatten face and proceed the cutting. For this imported part, the difficulties I face here is, I can't flatten it since the imported sheet metal part have some broken surface and that need quite some time to repair before we proceed to flatten it.

So, what I did was, select a plane that is normal to the end face of this sheet metal part, then, use the spline line to create a curve which is exactly snap to the mid point of every step faces, base on the spline curve, extrude a surface which will pass through the sheet metal part. Finally, use the intersection curve to obtain the line that exactly fall onto every bend surfaces.
Here's the video which shown you more clearly about what I have done!

Monday Glance Time #7 - Micro Robots & Cyborgs

Aloha~ Good Monday, Tyler do feel great to see you all again~ Today, I'm gonna highlight on the micro/nano robot design which inspired from animals, insects and bugs. On the other hand, i will show you some researching on Cyborg insects technology, means how to control insects by using some signals or electronics device.. It's scary!!! Try to imagine.. just one day, even a housefly which flying around us could be a spy to trespass our privacy~ OMG.. Be prepare for your pesticide~~;)

DragonFly Robot Micro UAVs - Israel is developing a robot the size of a hornet to attack terrorists. This might be the prototype..

Hex Bugs Nano - Okay, so it isn't as artsy as making gooey bugs in a miniature oven, but HexBug's little micro-robotic tchotchkes are a good time in their own right.
MTRAN3 - Although this project was about 2 years ago, but still i were very impressed. Kinda transformer feel!!

Cyborg insects - Scary~ scary~ scary~ Watch some cyborg insects that are being developed and see a robot controlled by a moth.

Robots inspired by animals - Robotics researchers are increasingly turning to nature for inspiration. Watch a robotic salamander, a water strider robot, mechanical cockroaches and some cool self-configuring robots.
