  1. “How do I impress the interviewer?”
  2. “How do I talk about college/ university project or internships experiences?”
“Interview” for an engineering graduate can be a little scary, but they don't have to be!

As a follow up to our previous post regarding addressing high-skill talent issue in Malaysia, we are sharing some essential interview questions for engineering graduate like you to share your best value with potential employers.

Here are some interview tips to ease you to interview effectively. Take the time for proper preparation as it will help to alleviate some of your interview anxiety and set you apart from other applicants.

Question #1 : What CAD/ CAM/ CAE Software Do You Really Know?

This is common where interviewer questions you about your experience with software such as SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, AutoCAD and etc.

A company is unlike college or university where it has preferred and dedicated software for design, engineering and/or manufacturing. Hence, with that said, the interviewer is evaluating how soon you can master the software to get the actual work done, of course, the sooner the better.

So, it’s advisable review all the design, engineering and/or manufacturing software that you’ve learn over the years. You will have a higher change to get employed if you are able to demonstrate adequate knowledge about the software that the employer is currently implementing. A certificate
might comes in handy to best prove you have the competence to carry out your job. As an example, having a SOLIDWORKS Certificate demonstrates your expertise with 3D Solid Modeling, design concepts, and sustainable design, giving you a competitive edge in today's job market.

Question #2 : Share with Me About Your Past Engineering Project?

After your basic self-introduction, this is the session to show the depth of your skills and experience. Interviewer needs your portfolio to show proof of who you are and what you can do!
You may share your past projects (e.g. IME Design Competition 2014), internships or working experiences in related field based on the proposed flow below,

  • Think of a specific or most challenging engineering project that you have been involved with during past year.
  • Have a short brief about some critical engineering challenges that you’ve faced
  • Share your greatest success in using the principles of logic to solve the mentioned engineering problem
  • Reveal what could you have done to be more successful in achieving your goal

Engineering has never been more competitive—emerging from the ever-increasing consumer demand for better and faster innovative product at a lower price.

Fostering collaborative team work within and across functions involving design, engineering and manufacturing is utmost important as it has great impact to a company’s product development process.

Engineers often will get into arguments due to differences in working style, personality and ideas. Some of the best-engineered ideas are born out of an individual’s ability to challenge, others’ ways of thinking. So be sure you are ready to explain how you’ve collaborated with diverse team members to meet your project goal.

After reviewing the three (3) questions, you should be able to give the interviewer a complete picture of who you are. So, be prepared and excel at your upcoming interview.
